About sixty per cent of women face sudden loosening of hair (alopecia) at some phase in their lives and it affects both emotional and social well being of women as socially it is unacceptable for them as compared to men. Although alopecia can affect any part of the body but when it occurs in the scalp, that is the most distressing situation.
There are many factors involved in the underlying cause of alopecia including family history of alopecia, medications, stress or sudden trauma or diet. However, alopecia is an autoimmune disease in which your immune system mistakenly attacks your hair follicles. If you have alopecia the follicles shrinks and stop produces hair leading to hair loss or bald patches.
A number of medications are available that help stimulates hair growth but the most common treatment for hair loss in women is minoxidil (Rogaine). Researchers have proven minoxidil is safe medication and confirmed that 2% solution of minoxidil applied to the scalp regularly could stimulate hair growth. Rather, it is the best method for hair re-growth than hair transplant surgery.
If your hair loss is a result of androgenetic alopecia, minoxidil (Rogaine) can help stop the hair loss and to some extent, it can help re-grow new hair.
Minoxidil is the only medicine which is FDA approved to treat female pattern baldness and it works best at the initial stage of losing hair. You don’t need a prescription from any doctor, it is available over the counter.

Apart from its benefits, there are some side effects of using the drug minoxidil like skin irritation, unwanted hair growth in the wrong places, can take months to see results, it can cause irritation and redness to the skin and of course, it is expensive.
